L'ANNO DEL CENTENARIO

13 APRILE 1907 - 13 APRILE 2007

THE YEAR OF THE CENTENARY

APRIL, 13, 1907 - APRIL, 13, 2007

It was the 13th of april in 1907… while the city was in the middle of a severe economic crisis, the first repair shops were born - and they will become the Alfa Romeo; while the city centre roads were still trodden by vehicles towed by horses, while the first suffragettes were outraging with their quest for emancipation… just a hop from Sant’Ambrogio and the Last Supper, a new place would open its doors and leave its mark on every milanese, regardless of age or social class.

At the crossroads of the arterial streets in the lively urban traffic, quite close to the Sacred Heart Catholic University (which moved just beside this charming spot in 1932), but most of all with its welcoming spaces and its classic, early-century liberty style, in memory of the best traditional asburgic cafè together with the possibility of creating one’s own personal space where one can spend the free-time absorbed in reading, in conversation, in tasting, or just in observing the motley crews who have always hanged out there… all this made the Bar Magenta a timeless icon for the costume of the city.

Far more than any other public space in the city, the Magenta has shared with Milan its saddest and finest hours of century marked by the two world wars, the different social movements, the radical cultural changes, the different crazes and mores, the economics crisis, the urges for growth and wellbeing. Milan has built its leadership through these phenomena, gaining its fame as a cultural toe hold, a changement lab, an international metropolis: this corner silently assisted to the development of this varied and complex dimension from Largo D’Ancona; within its walls, the youngest generations opinions were built together with the rising support for a democratic confrontation and the growth of the citizens’ civil conscience.

Between beers and cappuccinos, special sandwiches and salades, the Bar Magenta has thus become an active and participating witness in the modern and civil evolution of our society in one of the most intense decade for the history of the city.

More than half a million people crowd in through that glass door while stepping on the Magenta’s brand in a marble floor. An astounding crowd of people, intellets, lives, experiences all gathered at the Magenta since 1907. Our hectic XXI century habits still find its place here, in those same walls which have hosted our great-grandfathers.

Bar Magenta is determined to break into its second century with the same, perpetual mission: to offer Milan’s people and all the friends of this city, regardless of race, age and ideas, an unforgettable place where spending the finest hours of your day.
